There are times when the immune system is doing too much to the point that it makes us experience symptoms like rashes, itchiness, and even difficulty breathing. How do we tell the body to calm down?

Allergies are an increasingly common concern that affects a lot of people. From seasonal allergies to food sensitivities and severe reactions to insect bites, allergies bring a wide range of symptoms from mild to life-threatening anaphylaxis.

In the current conventional medicine, allergies are managed with the use of corticosteroids, antihistamines, or allergy shots. These treatments are effective in controlling the symptoms but most of the time, these do not provide permanent solutions. Patients find themselves dependent on medications, which can come with side effects and may not fully address the root cause of their allergic reactions.

Developed by Dr. Nader Soliman, Soliman Auricular Acupuncture Therapy (SAAT) is an alternative treatment for managing allergies. SAAT is a highly specialized form of acupuncture that uses specific points in the ear. This is based on the principles of traditional East Asian medicine, viewing the ear as a representation of the entire body. SAAT aims to provide a holistic "reset" to the body's overactive immune response to different triggers to help reduce and in the long run, eliminate allergic reactions.

What can SAAT treat?

SAAT is a promising treatment for a variety of allergies which include:
  • Food allergies: dairy, nuts, mammalian meat, gluten, fruits, shellfish
  • Environmental allergies: pet dander, tree, pollen dust
  • Chemical and medication sensitivities

The SAAT Protocol

The Consultation
A face-to-face initial consultation is necessary before starting any treatments. During the consult, your medical history will be discussed, physical assessment will also be done. This is the best time to tell everything there is to know about your allergies such as triggers, symptoms, severity, etc. Note that this is an important aspect before the treatment because this will determine if you are suitable for the SAAT protocol and where the needle/s should be specifically placed in the ear. After the consultation, you will be provided with a treatment plan and are given the option to get the treatment on the same day or if you'd like to schedule it on a different date.

The Treatment
Once the reactive point on the ear for your specific allergen has been identified, a 3-mm sterile needle is placed into the skin of the ear and is worn for 3-4 weeks, providing continuous stimulation. Several reminders will be given to you before and after the treatment. It is important to keep the area of the needle dry for the duration of the treatment. Also, note that you will be advised to avoid allergens during the treatment. Gradual reintroduction of allergens should be done with the guidance of Dr. Ting.

For some patients with more complex conditions or additional co-factors, weekly acupuncture sessions may be recommended. While others may need another round of the four-week treatment to achieve the best results. This personalized approach ensures that each patient's unique medical needs are addressed effectively.
